Depending on who you talk to, the Tigard Area Farmer's Market was started around 1993 or 1994 by the Tigard Chamber of Commerce and incorporated in 1997. The market is now an independent public benefit corporation. The market has a board of directors, made up of local business people that provide a lot of direction, skill and amusement.
Originally, the market was held on Saturday at the Portland Clinic parking lot on Oleson and Hall.. Several years ago, The Portland Clinic started operating on Saturdays and needed the use of the parking area for their patients. We had the choice of having to find a new site or changing operations to Sunday. We put out questionnaires at the market and received support from our customers that help us decide to make the change. The decision to hold the market on Sunday was also made to facilitate shopping for those who find it difficult to frequent the local markets held on Saturday. In 2006, the market moved again to the site in the Washington Square Too parking lot. The market was larger and the parking much better. Now in 2008, we have moved again. This time to the Young's Funeral Home in Tigard.
Trish joined the group in 1997 and Bobi joined in 2000. Since then, they have watched the market grow from 12-15 vendors to the large number of regular and part-time producers you see each weekend. Each year, the market continues to grow in size and interest.
All the people involved in the endeavour, be they vendors or volunteers, are very proud of the Tigard Farmer's Market and continue to help the operation grow and become a source of quality produce, crafts and entertainment in the local area. Your support by visiting the operation will help it continue to meet in its original goals.
Our ongoing committment is to bring fresh, locally produced fruits, vegetables, plants, food and crafts to the community; to support local farmers, and to provide a community gathering place.
All of us involved with the Tigard Area Farmer's market thank you for your continuing patronage. If there is anything that we can do to help make your experience at the market better; if you have ideas for new options; have products or produce you would like to display and market, please feel free to contact us. We can be reached by e-mail, phone or by stopping by the market business booth every Sunday from 9:00am to 2:00pm. Just ask for Trish or Bobi and we will be happy to chat about your needs or ideas or available space at the market.
